What is VEX?

The VEX Robotics competition is a robotics competition for elementary through university students. The purpose of the competition is to inspire students into pursuing careers in STEM. The design of the competition helps students train in areas, like physics, mathematics, programming, and digital design. The VEX Robotics competition includes three divisions in which different age groups of students are allowed to participate in. VEX IQ is for elementary students, VEX EDR is divided for middle and high school, and VEX U is for university students. Each year the VEX Robotics competition game changes to provide a new challenge for these students. This year's game for EDR and VEXU is Change Up.

Change Up is played on a 12x12 foot square field configured as shown in the image. The rules for VEX U are nearly identical to the rules for EDR. Unlike EDR, VEX U teams are required to create two complementary robots, one 15- inch robot, and a 24-inch robot. The matches consist of two university teams – one red and one blue – competing against each other in a forty-five-second autonomous period (instead of 15 seconds for EDR) followed by one minute and fifteen seconds (instead of 1 minute and 45 seconds for EDR) of driver-controlled play. The objective of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing team by placing balls in the Golas.
